Graaff Reinet Gun Club is a premier shooting facility located on the historic Roodebloem Farm near the town of Graaff-Reinet in South Africa’s Eastern Cape. Situated at an elevation of over 1,500 meters within the Sneeuberg mountain range, the club is uniquely positioned to offer a world-class training environment that combines professional infrastructure with the rugged beauty of the Karoo landscape. It is a vital hub for both competitive sport shooters and local hunters, providing a highly regulated space for skill development and firearm certification.
The facility is fully accredited by the Clay Target Shooting Association of South Africa (CTSASA) and the South African Police Service (SAPS), ensuring adherence to international safety and technical standards. It features a comprehensive array of disciplines supported by automated trap systems:
Trench Disciplines: Olympic Trap and Universal Trench layouts utilizing up to 15 automated machines.
Trap Disciplines: ATA Trap, DTL (Down-The-Line), and Double-Rise configurations.
Skeet: Olympic, English, and NSSA Skeet variations.
Sporting: FITASC Sporting, English Sporting, and 5-Stand layouts designed to simulate live field shooting.
A defining feature of the club is its challenging high-altitude ballistics and complex terrain. The thin air at 1,500m+ elevation reduces atmospheric drag, causing clay targets to maintain higher speeds for longer durations compared to coastal ranges. Furthermore, the natural background—consisting of mountain slopes and deep "dongas" (ravines)—presents significant visual challenges for target acquisition. The semi-arid Karoo climate introduces variable winds and cold winter temperatures, making it a rigorous testing ground for athletes preparing for international championships.
Professional instruction is a core component of the club’s offerings, led by experienced officials such as Secretary Mark, a CTSASA-qualified coach. The club provides a pathway for shooters to obtain "Dedicated Sport Shooter" status, which is essential for firearm licensing under South African law. Training formats include:
Beginner Instruction: Safety orientations and basic shotgun handling for new shooters.
Elite Coaching: Advanced technical sessions for competitive shooters in Olympic and Sporting disciplines.
Professional Training: Firearm proficiency assessments for military and security personnel.
The club is part of a broader shooting ecosystem in Graaff-Reinet, maintaining close ties with the Karoo Wingshooting outfitter for professional bird hunting safaris. It is also located near Kennedy Gun makers and Boomsticks, which are elite providers of specialized firearms, traditional shooting apparel, and custom ammunition. For social gatherings and events, the club utilizes the Botanics Sport Bar & Grill, offering a comfortable space for corporate groups and families to relax after shooting sessions.
Operating Hours:
Shooting Range: Primarily Saturday and Sunday (09:00–17:00); weekday access is available by prior appointment for groups and practice.
