E.J. Churchill Shooting Ground

Lane End, United Kingdom

E.J. Churchill Shooting Ground is a world-class, premium shooting destination located on the historic 5,000-acre West Wycombe Estate in the picturesque Chiltern Hills, Buckinghamshire. Renowned as the "Home of Shooting," it combines a 125-year heritage of fine British gunmaking with state-of-the-art sporting infrastructure. It stands out as the only UK business to seamlessly integrate a shooting ground, bespoke gunmakers, a sporting agency, country outfitters, and an elite event-hosting company.

The scale and technological advancement of the ground are unmatched in the industry. It features over 120 shooting stands spread across 40 acres of landscaped woodland, offering six main shooting disciplines including Skeet, Down-The-Line (DTL), Automatic Ball Trap (ABT), Sporting, Sportrap, and Compak. The facility is highly automated, utilizing around 300 Promatic traps integrated with the Churchill Claymate system, which allows experienced shooters to navigate the course and practice at their own pace. Furthermore, it houses an Elite Training Centre used by Team GB athletes and operates a fleet of silent electric Polaris vehicles to maintain the estate's peaceful serenity.

The natural topography plays a crucial role in the shooting experience, offering a highly dynamic environment. The varied landscape creates natural optical illusions and challenging wind conditions that test even the most experienced shots. Key highlights of the terrain and target difficulty include:

  • High Towers: Artificial towers designed to simulate extreme high-driven pheasants, requiring excellent lead and follow-through techniques.

  • Grouse Butts: Specialized trenches offering fast, low-trajectory targets that replicate traditional moorland grouse shooting.

  • Dedicated Game Stands: 40 specialized stands that provide 25 different driven target trajectories to keep practice varied and realistic.

E.J. Churchill is both an elite competitive arena and a welcoming educational hub. It frequently hosts major international events, such as the CPSA World English Sporting Championships and the FITASC World Sporting Championship. Despite its elite status, the ground is highly dedicated to growing the sport and making it accessible. It offers highly personalized training formats, including:

  • Young Guns Academy: Specialized holiday programs tailored for juniors (ages 9 and up), focusing on safety, air rifles, and clay shooting.

  • Ladies Mornings: Social and educational sessions designed specifically for female shooters of all skill levels, from complete novices to seasoned competitors.

  • Caddied Rounds: Professional caddies who guide experienced shooters through the course, operate the traps, and keep score.

Ultimately, the venue is perfectly suited for a diverse audience, ranging from absolute beginners and families to Olympic champions and corporate teams. Beyond standard practice, it is famous for its "Simulated Game Days," which replicate the thrill of traditional British game shooting combined with exceptional catering and hospitality. With luxurious on-site facilities like the Terrace Café & Bar and a comprehensive Country Outfitters shop, it provides a holistic luxury countryside experience.
